Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (2+2)

The Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (2+2) at the University of Southampton Malaysia is a four-year programme, with two years in Malaysia followed by two years at the University of Southampton UK. Students develop knowledge in areas such as mechanics, materials, thermofluids and manufacturing, preparing them for opportunities across automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and energy industries.

The 2+2 pathway allows students to complete the first two years in Malaysia before continuing at the University of Southampton UK, leading to a UK qualification from a Russell Group university. Students develop knowledge in mechanical design, materials and manufacturing while strengthening analytical and problem-solving skills relevant to engineering careers.

Graduates can pursue opportunities across mechanical engineering, automotive, aerospace, manufacturing and energy. Career options may include Mechanical Engineer, Automotive Engineer, Manufacturing Engineer, Biomedical Engineer, Design Engineer and Energy Systems Engineer, depending on their skills, interests and experience.

Yes, the programme is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Engineering Council, and European Accreditation of Engineering Programmes (EAEP). It meets the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer and Professional Engineer registration and is also recognised internationally through the Washington Accord.

The Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (2+2) is completed over two years at the University of Southampton Malaysia followed by two years at the University of Southampton UK. The Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (4+0) is completed entirely at University of Southampton Malaysia and includes a compulsory internship. Both pathways cover core mechanical engineering fundamentals, while the specialisations and specialist modules available in Year Three and Four vary between the two pathways.

The entry requirements for the Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (2+2) vary depending on your qualification. Typical entry requirements include:

• A-Level: ABC, including grade A in Maths and Grade B in Physics, with a pass in the Physics Practical (where it is separately endorsed).
• IB Diploma: Pass with 36 points overall, with 18 points required at Higher Level including 6 at Higher Level in Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches) or 7 at Higher Level in Mathematics (Applications and Interpretation), and 6 at Higher Level Physics.
• STPM: BBB, including Mathematics, Physics and one other STEM subject.
• UEC: AAABBB, with A in Advanced Mathematics I & II, Physics and B3/B4 in two other STEM subjects (Computing accepted).

Applicants are required to meet the English language requirements through one of the following recognised qualifications:

• IELTS: 6.5, minimum 6.0 in all components
• SPM CEFR: Level B2 or above
• GCSE/IGCSE (First Language): Grade C
• IGCSE (Second Language or equivalent): Grade A
• UEC: B3

Tuition fees follow the 2+2 pathway, with students paying applicable fees based on their study location:

• Local students: RM54,300 per annum for Year 1 and 2 (at the University of Southampton Malaysia); RM141,112 (£24,800) per annum for Year 3 and 4 (at the University of Southampton, UK), inclusive of the Special 20% Transition Bursary.
• International students: RM62,900 per annum for Year 1 and 2 (at the University of Southampton Malaysia); RM141,112 (£24,800) per annum for Year 3 and 4 (at the University of Southampton, UK). International student fees are subject to a 6% Sales and Service Tax (SST) in accordance with Malaysian government regulations.
