Achievements

For Chan Jun Wei, the decision to pursue a 2+2 programme with the University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM) was life-changing. Starting his studies in Johor and completing them in the UK, Jun Wei credits this pathway with easing his cultural transition and building lifelong friendships that became his support system.

Beyond peer support, Jun Wei found himself welcomed into a broader community through university-organised fresher events, where he built connections and friendships beyond the classroom. This combination of social networks and structured support helped him settle into life abroad while maintaining his wellbeing.

Today, Jun Wei works as a Planning Manager at Singtel Singapore, where he leads cross-functional projects across regional and enterprise sectors. His responsibilities span from driving regional tenders and new system rollouts to leading cloud and physical link migrations. He also manages regulatory-driven implementations, working closely with C-Suite leaders and departments like Product, Legal, Procurement, and Operations to ensure strategic alignment and smooth execution.

“My role allows me to oversee full project delivery, from pre-sales to post-sales,” he shares. “It’s sharpened my project management skills and enhanced my decision-making abilities.”

At Singtel, Jun Wei appreciates a culture that blends support with challenge. “Managers genuinely listen and encourage us to step outside our comfort zones. You’re empowered to grow and make a real impact,” he notes.

The company’s forward-thinking approach also extends to sustainability. Singtel integrates ESG goals into leadership incentives, applies internal carbon pricing, and seeks partnerships that drive green innovation.

One of Jun Wei’s defining career moves was starting his professional journey overseas with Huawei Saudi Arabia, where he worked as a Network Design Engineer. “The learning curve was steep, but that intensity became a powerful springboard for my growth,” he reflects.

This early experience laid the groundwork for his transition into project management, where he now oversees large-scale, strategic initiatives across the region.

Looking ahead, Jun Wei sees both challenges and opportunities within Singapore’s telecommunications sector. As connectivity becomes increasingly commoditised, telcos like Singtel must innovate to stay competitive.

“Singtel is rolling out technologies like 5G+, Network Slicing, and Security-as-a-Slice, which enable faster and more secure connectivity for both businesses and consumers,” he explains. While the B2C segment is mature, Jun Wei identifies significant potential in the B2B market, driven by the rapid growth of AI, cloud computing, and data center infrastructure.

“In this new era, connectivity isn’t just a pipeline, it’s a critical enabler of digital transformation.”

Jun Wei credits his time at the University of Southampton both in Malaysia and in the UK for shaping his adaptability and professional versatility. “The flexibility of modules exposed me to engineering, finance, and even business consulting projects. This breadth gave me a real edge during interviews and allowed me to explore different career paths.”

His journey wasn’t without setbacks. “I failed four modules and had to retake exams over the summer. Our UAV project almost failed when our aircraft couldn’t take off on test day,” he recalls. “But those moments taught me resilience.”

Jun Wei was recently honoured with Singtel Singapore’s prestigious Network People Star Award, personally presented by the CTO during the Singtel Networks Townhall. Based on this achievement, his resilience and hard work stand as a testament to the quality products and strong leadership he consistently brings to the community.

Above all, what Jun Wei remembers most fondly from his UoSM days is the laughter. “The campus always filled with warmth and humour, from silly mistakes shared among friends to late-night troubleshooting sessions with supportive lecturers.”

When being asked to describe UoSM in one word, he simply said “Laughters. Because every challenge we faced was made lighter by the friendships we built.”

From Johor to the UK, Saudi Arabia to Singapore, Jun Wei Chan’s story is one of resilience, adaptability, and the power of global education in shaping future leaders.
