When the world came to a standstill during the COVID-19 pandemic, many students faced extraordinary challenges in adapting to new ways of learning and living. For Hafiz Amani, the transition from the University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM) to the University of Southampton (UoS) in the UK in 2020 was particularly unique, marked not only by a geographical move but also by global lockdowns and remote learning.

"Arriving in a new country without the opportunity for face-to-face interactions made the cultural and academic transition more difficult," Hafiz recalls. "Everything was virtual; lectures, tutorials, even social events. It took a conscious effort to build connections online, but gradually, I found my place in the community."

Maintaining mental and emotional well-being during this time was critical. From establishing a healthy routine and staying physically active to regular video calls with loved ones back in Malaysia, Hafiz made it a priority to manage the stress and isolation of remote life. "Being grouped with fellow Malaysians in my accommodation also made a big difference. We supported each other during a very uncertain time," Hafiz adds.

Today, Hafiz Amani serves as a Technical Services Engineer at Thurston Aviation Ltd, a leading PART 145 Maintenance Company in the UK. Working within the Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisation (CAMO), Hafiz plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and compliance of aircraft.

"My responsibilities range from monitoring inspections and repairs to updating technical documentation such as Airworthiness Directives (ADs) and Service Bulletins," Hafiz explains. "I also plan and schedule maintenance activities, collaborating with departments like flight operations, maintenance, and quality assurance. It’s a role that blends technical precision with regulatory compliance."

The decision to specialise in CAMO wasn’t an initial career goal, but one that came into focus during Hafiz's postgraduate studies. With a Master's in Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering, Hafiz developed a strong foundation in aircraft systems, aerodynamics, and propulsion; skills that have proven indispensable in this niche field of aviation.

"CAMO aligns perfectly with my interest in aviation and safety management. It’s rewarding to know that my work directly contributes to keeping aircraft operational and safe," Hafiz says.

At Thurston Aviation, the company culture supports both technical excellence and personal growth. “There’s a strong emphasis on collaboration, training, and continuous improvement. The team is not only highly skilled but also supportive. Social events like BBQs, team-building outings, and the annual Christmas meal help foster a great sense of community.”

The company also prioritises sustainability; an increasingly vital focus in aviation. From energy-efficient maintenance practices to eco-conscious material use and waste reduction programmes, Thurston Aviation is committed to reducing its environmental impact. “As CAMO engineers, we’re actively involved in helping aircraft operate more efficiently and adapt to evolving sustainability standards.”

Looking back at the early stages of this journey, Hafiz reflects fondly on UoSM: "If I had to describe it in one word, it would be connected. The small, close-knit community at UoSM created a strong sense of belonging. Everyone, from professors to security guards, was approachable. It felt like HOME."

That sense of community laid the foundation for a career defined by resilience, adaptability, and precision. And in a sector as dynamic and critical as aviation, Hafiz is confident that the sky is only the beginning.
