On 24 August 2024, the University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM) proudly participated in the Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) Heats Malaysia 2024, a prestigious national public speaking competition. Organised by the IMechE Malaysia Branch Young Members Section and hosted by UNITEN, the event drew talented participants from esteemed institutions across the country.
Seven students representing universities such as Universiti Malaya, Asia Pacific University, the University of Nottingham, and Heriot-Watt University competed fiercely for top honours. Among them was Nilavarasen, a student from UoSM’s Engineering Foundation Year, who had earned his place by winning the university-level SOfE competition. Displaying outstanding poise and eloquence, Nilavarasen emerged victorious on the national stage, securing the title of champion!
With this remarkable achievement, Nilavarasen will now have the honour of representing Malaysia at the Southeast Asia level in Jakarta, slated for late October. His winning presentation, titled "The Rationale Behind the Existence of EVs: A Comprehensive Perspective," captivated the judges with its insightful analysis and compelling delivery, highlighting his exceptional talent.
In his presentation, Nilavarasen explored the significant benefits of electric vehicles (EVs), including:
- Environmental Benefits: EVs contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, playing a vital role in combating climate change and promoting cleaner air quality.
- Energy Efficiency: Electric vehicles are more energy-efficient compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, leading to reduced energy consumption and lower operating costs.
- Economic Benefits: The adoption of EVs can lead to long-term economic savings for both consumers and governments, including lower fuel costs and reduced maintenance expenses.
- Technological Advancements in Batteries: Continuous innovations in battery technology are enhancing the range, performance, and affordability of EVs, making them a more viable option for consumers worldwide.
However, Nilavarasen also highlighted the challenges that countries like Malaysia face in making the transition to electric vehicles:
- High Initial Costs of EVs: The upfront cost of purchasing an electric vehicle remains a barrier for many consumers, despite long-term savings.
- Inadequate Infrastructure: The lack of sufficient EV charging stations in Malaysia poses a significant challenge for widespread EV adoption.
- Electric Supply and Grid Stability Issues: Ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply is crucial for supporting the growing number of EVs on the road.
- Availability of Raw Materials for EV Production: Concerns over the availability and sustainable sourcing of raw materials for batteries and other components are critical issues that need to be addressed.
Congratulations once again to Nilavarasen! We are incredibly proud of his achievement and wish him the very best in the upcoming Southeast Asia competition in Jakarta. His success is a testament to the talent and dedication nurtured at UoSM, and we look forward to his continued success on the international stage.
