Project Abstract
This PhD research focuses on the production, characterisation, and sustainability assessment of biojet fuels as a viable alternative to fossil-derived aviation fuels. The aviation sector contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with an urgent need for decarbonisation pathways that maintain fuel compatibility and safety standards.
The project will explore catalytic and thermochemical conversion pathways, such as the hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) synthesis method, using sustainable feedstocks including black soldier fly, algae, and waste oils. Emphasis will be placed on optimising process parameters to enhance fuel yield, selectivity, and compliance with ASTM D7566 specifications. Techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) will be integrated to quantify the environmental and economic viability of the proposed routes.
The project aims to deliver insights into the scalability and sustainability of biojet fuels, contributing to green aviation and the achievement of global net-zero targets.
