As part of the University of Southampton Malaysia's (UoSM) ongoing commitment to preparing students for the professional world, Foundation Year students recently participated in an enriching industrial visit to H Q Tool Industries Sdn. Bhd. in Ulu Choh, Johor. This visit, held on 10th, 12th, and 13th September 2024, was part of the Industry and Community Engagement (ICE) Programme, which aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world industry practices.
H Q Tool Industries is a leader in precision engineering, specialising in plastic injection, CNC machining (turning and milling), forging, and secondary processes. The visit offered students a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience of advanced manufacturing processes and witness how theoretical concepts are applied in industry.
The students were warmly welcomed by Mr. Gopi, the General Manager of H Q Tool Industries, who delivered an insightful presentation about the company’s journey, its organisational structure, and the broad range of products and capabilities that have earned the company a solid reputation in the industry. Mr. Gopi also highlighted the company’s impressive achievements, providing a clear perspective on what it takes to succeed in the highly competitive manufacturing sector.
Following the presentation, students were given a tour of the company’s state-of-the-art facility, where they were guided by key members of the H Q Tool team, including Mr. Reddy, Mr. Fadly, Ms. Siti, and Mr. Lee. During the tour, students had the opportunity to observe high-tech machinery in action, from CNC machining to plastic injection molding, allowing them to appreciate the precision and expertise required in the manufacturing process.
The visit concluded with an inspiring talk by Mr. Thomas Lee, Founder and Managing Director of H Q Tool Industries. Mr. Lee shared his personal career journey, providing invaluable insights into the industry and potential career pathways for young engineers. His words motivated the students to pursue excellence in their academic and professional endeavors, encouraging them to remain curious and innovative in their future careers.

The visit was made possible through the efforts of Asst. Prof. Beh Shiao Lin from the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Asst. Prof. Adrian Tan, Enterprise Lead, who coordinated the visit as part of UoSM's ICE Programme.
This experience not only enriched the students' understanding of the industry but also reinforced the value of hands-on learning, equipping them with practical knowledge that will serve them well in their future careers.
