Project Abstract

Wind energy has gained traction and become a prominent source of renewable energy. According to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), 93.6 GW of wind capacity was installed globally in 2021, leading to a total wind capacity of 837 GW, which is a 12.4% increase from 2020. A Savonius rotor is a type of vertical-axis wind turbine that possesses good self-start behaviour, which is suitable for low wind speed areas.

However, the efficiency is relatively low compared to other wind turbine systems. This research aims to design a Savonius turbine with a rotor blade that is expandable and morphable to suit different wind conditions, hence increasing the efficiency of the turbine.

The mechanism, material, and control system of the turbine will be scrutinised and designed. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis and experimental tests in a wind tunnel are expected to be conducted to investigate the turbine performance.
