Biography
Caleb Au is a Postgraduate research student within Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton. He graduated with an MEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree from Heriot-Watt University Malaysia in 2022. In 2023, he started the PhD research entitled “Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) aided autonomous navigation for Environment-Aware Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Applications”.
During his undergraduate degree, he had completed his final-year project titled “Real-time pothole detection system on vehicle using improved YOLOv5 in Malaysia”, of which papers were published and presented at IECON 2022 in Brussels. His experiences from completing projects at undergraduate level led him to start a PhD project under Dr. Won SeungHwan, Dr. Heng Wei Wei, and Dr. Kate Farrahi.

Current Research Project
Research on autonomous navigation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) plays a pivotal role in designing reliable industrial UAVs for diverse applications. In our MOSTI TeD1 project, we are delving into the great potential on autonomous navigation under tree canopy (equivalent to partially GPS-denied environment). Such UAVs will be extremely valuable for security and data collection in Malaysian farms or plantations. Hence, we propose a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) aided approach that enables the proposed UAV to execute successful autonomous navigation tasks under tree canopy. The mission is formulated by exploiting the Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) and solved by a novel DRL algorithm (in parallel, the conventional schemes will also be evaluated as benchmarks.).
