On the 15th of October 2024, the University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM) played host to the highly anticipated IME Innovation Day 2025. The event, co-organised by the IME Group of Companies and the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UoSM, provided a platform for industry professionals, academics, and students to converge and discuss the latest trends and breakthroughs in engineering design and innovation.

The day commenced with a captivating opening address by Mr. TK Teoh, the Founder and Director of IME. His speech emphasised the crucial role innovation plays in driving the future of engineering, setting the tone for a day filled with inspiration and forward-thinking ideas. Mr. Teoh’s message resonated with the audience, encouraging attendees to embrace cutting-edge advancements and rethink traditional approaches to design.

Following the opening address, Ir. Dr. Pieter Pottas, Interim CEO and COO of UoSM, took the stage for a keynote speech that underscored UoSM’s ongoing efforts to cultivate research excellence and foster talent development. Dr. Pottas highlighted the university's deep commitment to forging strong partnerships with industry leaders like IME. He also emphasised how these collaborations aim to provide students with hands-on exposure to real-world challenges while advancing research in areas critical to the engineering sector.

One of the major highlights of the day was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University of Southampton Malaysia and the IME Group of Companies. This milestone agreement, signed by Ir. Dr. Pieter Pottas and Mr. TK Teoh, was witnessed by Prof. Pu Suan Hui, Head of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UoSM, and Mr. CW Sew, Head of Sales at IME.

The MoU signifies a strengthened partnership focused on driving innovation and research while nurturing future engineering talent. The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration that will enable both parties to pool their expertise in delivering impactful solutions. With a shared vision for pushing the boundaries of design and engineering, the partnership seeks to enhance academic-industry synergies that will benefit students, researchers, and the wider community.

Throughout the event, attendees gained invaluable insights into the latest advancements in engineering design, with a special emphasis on SOLIDWORKS 2025, a premier tool in the field. Representatives from IME presented an in-depth look at how these innovative tools are revolutionising design processes, enabling engineers to create more efficient and effective solutions. The discussions centered around the practical applications of these tools, and how they can be harnessed to meet the ever-evolving demands of the industry.

The IME Innovation Day concluded with dynamic networking sessions, where participants had the opportunity to engage in thought-provoking discussions and explore future collaborations. The event fostered meaningful connections between academia and industry, creating new pathways for research, internships, and partnerships that will drive the future of engineering.

Overall, IME Innovation Day 2025 successfully bridged the gap between academic research and industry practice, spotlighting how innovation and collaboration can drive progress in the field of engineering. With its forward-thinking agenda and the signing of a pivotal MoU, the event underscored the importance of partnerships in shaping the future of engineering design and talent development.
