University of Southampton Malaysia Signs Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) With GKN Aerospace to Boost Collaboration in Aerospace Engineering
The University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM), a branch campus of the University of Southampton in the UK, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with leading aerospace supplier, GKN Aerospace, to boost the advancement of aerospace engineering through education and research.
The partnership will utilise GKN Aerospace’s technological expertise and resources, along with UoSM’s world-leading academic reputation to enhance experiential learning, academic exchanges, joint research, and development in the field of aerospace engineering.
The agreement was signed on 19th November 2021, by Prof. Rebecca Taylor, Pro Vice-Chancellor (ASEAN) and Chief Executive Officer of UoSM and Mr. Dave Davies, Site Director, Asia Operations of GKN Aerospace. The signing was witnessed by Dr. Mizarina Dato’ Abu Bakar, Chief Operating Officer of UoSM and Mr. Azli Haji Norali, Human Resources Director of GKN Aerospace. This marks the first high-level interaction between UoSM and GKN Aerospace, and the first MoU to be signed between a private university in Malaysia and GKN Aerospace.
Under the MoU, both parties mutually agree to collaborate in academic and technical exchanges, education and research, joint seminars and conferences, and activities to promote aerospace engineering . Students at UoSM will also benefit from this MoU in terms of industrial visits to GKN Aerospace, internship opportunities, and potential graduate placements with GKN Aerospace. These opportunities provide a better insight to the aerospace industry and allow them to have a better understanding on the career pathways.

The University of Southampton has seven campuses, six in the UK and one in Malaysia. The University was invited by the Malaysian Government to establish a branch campus, focusing on engineering programmes, within the EduCity development in Iskandar Puteri, Malaysia. UoSM officially opened to welcome its pioneer cohort of students in October 2012. In October 2021, UoSM relocated to a brand-new campus , located in Eco Botanic, Iskandar Puteri, Johor.
