Project Abstract
Engineering structures are subject to gradual degradation due to complex loading and a changing environment, leading to the development of damage such as cracks. The subcritical cracks can develop over time and affect the durability and safety of structures. Therefore, timely and accurate detection and monitoring of cracks in engineering structures is essential to allow professional assessment.
This PhD project aims to design an array of low-cost disposable sensors using membranes made from conductive electrospun fibres placed over the area of interest for monitoring the structural health of civil structures. The scope of the project will cover (1) sensor synthesis and characterisation, (2) sensor design optimisation and (3) data post-processing for crack classification.
A series of experimental tests will be designed and conducted to understand the capabilities and limitations of the sensors.
